Research on difference between Kiwi Gujraties & Indian Gujraties - call to participate in research
I am currently recruiting participants for research on Gujarati identities in Wellington and hoping your organisation will be able to assist me.
My research is for a paper to be presented at a joint international conference of the ASA (Association of Social Anthropologists of the UK and the Commonwealth), the ASAANZ (Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa/New Zealand), and the AAS (Australian Anthropological Society) to be held at the University of Auckland from 8 to 12 December 2008.
This paper will explore how being Indian/Gujarati in New Zealand differs from being Indian/Gujarati in India. It is hoped that this project will contribute to understandings of the experiences of minority ethnic groups, particularly those of Indian descent, in New Zealand. This research will build on some of the issues raised in my Masters thesis (completed in 2007 at Victoria University of Wellington) and will also contribute to my PhD research (to be commenced in October 2008 at the University of Oxford).
I am inviting Gujaratis aged 16 and over to participate in tape-recorded 'focus groups' that will last approximately one hour. Each focus group will involve four to six participants who will be asked to discuss their opinions on, and experiences of, the differences between being Indian/Gujarati in New Zealand and being Indian/Gujarati in India. It is not anticipated that any topics of a personal or private nature will be discussed. The focus groups will be held at a location chosen by participants and transport will be provided to and from this location.
All material collected in this study will be kept confidential. No other person besides me will see any of the information I collect. Should any participants feel the need to withdraw from the project, they may do so without question at any time before the data is analysed. The focus group material will form the basis of my conference paper which will be uploaded to the conference website and presented orally at the conference. Pseudonyms will be used for all participants and no information will be provided that might enable them to be identified personally.
I would greatly appreciate it if you are able to participate. I can be contacted at gilbertson.amanda@gmail.com or 027 338 2233. If you have any questions or would like to receive further information about the project, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
